This pictorial history is a look into the early years of eastern North Carolina, covering the counties of Pitt, Nash, Edgecombe, Beaufort, Martin, Greene, Washington, and Tyrrell.

Within these pages you will see horse-drawn carts moving over dirt roads, and cars bustling along smooth downtown streets. Trains, planes, boats, and bikes being used for commerce and for leisure. You will see people farming and fishing, canning and logging, and other industries that continue to this day.

Looking within and without of stores, banks, gas stations, and hotels, we are given a glimpse into the necessities of the day. Students, some smiling and some straight-faced, can be seen learning in one-room school houses, normal schools, academies, colleges, and occasionally just at play. Many pages are filled with people serving their community. They fought fires, fought illegal activity, and of course a fair few fought in wars.

Family and friends are pictured coming together, whether it be at church, at the fairgounds, or even gathering the whole family on the porch for a photo.

As a pictorial history, this book provides a snapshot (well, many snapshots) of life, a glimpse into the day to day experiences of those who lived while cities and towns were starting to form and grow.
